This was only about 20 minutes from my dorm, I’d go out and drive all the time. The roads are all perfect and no one was ever out there except the rare tractor or the occasional other enthusiastic driver. Show me your best roads.

The best roads are the ones that lead to tracks.

I have many favorite roads in my neck of the woods.

Mt Wilson Access Road and Little Tujunga Canyon are now two of my favorites:

https://oppositelock.kinja.com/mt-wilson-and-little-tujunga-canyon-carving-1828600960

My absolute favorite is still probably Decker Rd since it never gets old, even driving it almost every day:

https://oppositelock.kinja.com/test-driving-the-miata-for-the-track-day-1827912043

And then I really loved the wild ride that I took one day on the way to work and now am in tight contention between Piuma Rd and Latigo Rd being my other favorites:

https://oppositelock.kinja.com/took-a-detour-on-the-commute-1828058377

There are probably many other roads that are very good but I have not driven them enough yet or just havent posted about them. I keep trying to get lost to find new stuff. The only road I will NEVER DRIVE AGAIN is Yerba Buena. It is an AWESOME layout of road but the pavement is so bad that I thought my car would fall apart midway through. It was not a fun experience to say the least..

This is SR20 in Washington, only it’s not the part of SR20 that people usually think of which is the North Cascades Highway. This is the part that goes over Sherman Pass in eastern Washington.

I used to go over that fairly often when my in-laws lived in Republic, which is on the other side of the pass. They’ve since moved down to Spokane so I don’t get over there much anymore. It’s fun road, but you do have to stay alert for deer and moose.

I’ve always loved Germany, I learned the language in school and I’ve been there a few times. I’m also going back in 3 weeks. I’ve often though about expatriating there eventually as I’ve worked for  and could potentially get back into and move with BASF, or use my engineering degree/experience to get a job there. I know for a time they were starting to give exceptions to make t easier to move there for engineers/tech as they’re losing a lot of the engineering workforce to age, but that would still be tough and a big change. But I am constantly thinking about and missing Germany.

The only thing close to a road view I have is one I drove the TL on a week or two ago. It was extremely narrow and had weeds growing in the middle of it, so it doesn’t get used much.

I miss Germany about 5 minutes after I drive in the US, sharing the road with morons and imbeciles.

This was a nice day late last year: Cold ~3C day somewhere in rural southwestern Germany, rented F-Type S cabrio, top down, heat on, empty roads, relax and have fun:

I’ve met a few through work. Army wives. One wanted to set me up with her niece (who was my age) but she became pregnant before she had the chance to come over here, so that went out the window. I also had a brief long-distance relationship with one last year. I just like the personality they tend to have.

The Autobahn can be fun for a little but you're right, the back roads are the way to go 99% of the time. I walked to work when I lived there so I basically did 25,000 fun miles in the FiST while exploring.

It is fun on the right road at the right time, but as truck traffic is thicker every year, it loses some luster. I visit every year or two, and notice it.  When I visit, I might try it for a couple hours, but then tire of it and find a secondary road.

The fastest I have traveled was in a rented F01 7er several years ago, which could consume road for long stretches at ~130 or more.  The Jaaaag was too loud and too cold much above 100, so I just enjoyed the time in it instead.

Fastest I went in my car was 145 and that was terrifying. It definitely wasn't comfortable but it could hit it occasionally. I mostly had good luck with traffic, no stops longer than like 20 minutes. I want to go back and tear it up soon while I still have friends there.

Luckily I don’t have a daily commute (unless you count the walk from bedroom to kitchen to living room) - f or a while I did though, it would take on nice weather days, about 45 minutes to go 17 miles (16.8 miles highway) in the morning and about 65 minutes in the evening . In the winter or bad weather days, hours.

The Catalina Highway was my favorite road in college. Received the most expensive ticket in my life on it, but thankfully didn’t go to jail. Use to get off work during the summer and head up it. You start in Tucson at about 105F and at the end of the highway you’re  at over 7k feet in Summerhaven and it’s 70F. Great road for motorcycles.

My favorite road is the OU-212; it’s a B road that connects on both ends with N-541 and streches for some 50km. It follows the hilly countryside in all of its crests, drops, and curves , as such it is now know as “la Sierra” by locals

other truly fantstic roads I had the chance to drive on was in British Colombia , the Sea to Sky highway, and in Ontario both the road that bordered Katchewanooka lake and the highway to Niagara from Toronto.

As for Mexico, the old route to Valle de Bravo is fantastic, so is the road to San Miguel de Allende, but by no means roads that could be enjoyable to drive quickly. The far end of Gomez Farias in Monterrey (a central avenue that culminates up a mountain) is also nice to drive on

I have yet to go that fast, dunno if I ever will - 135-140 is enough for me. I usually rent a large car for comfy cruising, and even then, once you hit 130 or so, risk seems to become more apparent.

I know people in Germany and Switzerland - sometimes I go there and don ’t even visit them, just to go sightseeing and spend a few days on the road. Do it now while you are young and know you can.

The roads to Valle de Bravo are quite interesting. Valle is a local tourist hotspot because if the lake and it’s very much divided into two areas, the center, where the hipsters live, and Avandaro, where the rich people live

Kinja'd!!!

So Valle used to be serviced by a small road connected to hwy 134   that winded down the Nevado national park before a toll road was created, this road was famous for how difficult it was to drive it and how beautiful it is.

The new road is also quite astounding, it takes you up north of Toluca and remains mostly straight before hitting a few hilly areas, that road is constantly filled with the rich people of Avandaro, seeing Porsches, M5s, and sport bikes is particularly common.

It’s a one lane highway with a limit of, I think, twenty five miles an hour. It would be great if it were closed off, but it is much too tight to have fun in traffic in a car. There’s no guardrails in a lot of spots as well. I got tagged doing 75, and almost got hauled off to jail. Didn’t realize two riders died the previous weekend and t he SD decided to put an end to spirited motos on the highway.
